Eco Expo Asia - Wide range of environmentally friendly products and services on display Eco Expo Asia is Hong Kong's only trade fair which is dedicated to products and services for environmental protection. The second edition of the show ran from 27 - 30 October 2007 at the AsiaWorld-Expo Centre, Hong Kong. 135 exhibitors and over 5,000 visitors attended the fair - including some 2,000 from overseas - proving its relevance and growing importance for the environmental industry. The largest percentage of visitors came from the Chinese mainland, followed by the USA, Canada, Taiwan, Japan and Australia. The fair was opened by the Hon. Audrey Eu, Chairwoman of the Panel on Environmental Affairs for the Legislative Council of the HKSAR. "I believe this event will further arouse awareness about the importance of protecting our city and provide possible solutions on how to achieve this," she said during her opening ceremony remarks on 27 October 2007. Also present to officiate the opening ceremony was Mr. Ou Jin, Vice Secretary of the Guangdong Association of Environmental Protection Industry. "The environmental industry is growing rapidly, especially in the Chinese mainland. I believe this event, ideally located in Hong Kong, will have a great impact on raising awareness and bringing forth new ideas in the Asian region. Our goal is to interact with different exhibitors, consulates and associations to exchange information and bring in foreign technologies to help improve the environment in the Chinese mainland," he said. Wide range of environmentally friendly products and services on display Visitors were pleased to see a wide range of products and services on display including biodegradable items, renewable & alternative power systems and energy, waste management solutions, 'Indoor Air Quality' products and much more. "I have been somewhat overwhelmed by the innovative ideas and technologies available at this fair. The possibilities are endless. I will definitely return in 2008," commented Mr. Randy Roach, Director of Marketing for Naked Lizard, a Trading & Marketing Company in the USA. Exhibitors impressed with high levels of internationality Exhibitor feedback was all round positive at this year's event. International exhibitor EcoFuture from Malaysia, a manufacturer of eco-products, commented on the high level of internationality at this year's event. "As a second-time exhibitor, we have noticed an increase in international attendance, especially in the number of traders who are interested in biodegradable products. Hong Kong is the key to Asia and we will certainly return next year," said Mrs. Yeo Kim Luang, Managing Director for EcoFuture. Japanese exhibitor, Ms. Tadayuki Sakamoto, Director for Koyoh Co., a water purifier distributor and manufacturer, noticed the high level of attendance of local visitors. "We are very impressed with the overall quality of the visitor attendance and have received great feedback from local buyers who are interested in sourcing our products. We are pleased to have participated in this year's event." Attendance of international VIPs reflects growing importance of show A large number of international VIPs attended this year's event. "We came here to exchange new ideas with professionals in the local environmental industry," stated Polish Consul for Commercial Affairs to Hong Kong & Macau, Mr. Andrzej Pieczonka. "Recognising this need we were able to bring the Director for the Ministry of the Environment of Poland, Mr. Jacek Jaskiewicz, to meet with prospective partners from the Chinese mainland to forge new business ventures." Visitor Ms. Lee-Ann Ford, President of LINC (Linking Individuals for Nature Conservation), a Non-Government Organisation, commented on the relevance of such an event in Asia, particularly in Hong Kong. "Eco Expo Asia is an event that contributes to Hong Kong's environmental protection community. These sorts of events are highly effective and I rate this year's event as an ongoing success. The partnerships created at the expo will potentially contribute to a healthier, cleaner global environment." Local Exhibitor, Mr. King Cheng, Executive Director for 3Tech Corporate, provider of renewable & alternative power systems and energy, shared Ms. Ford's opinion. "I am exceptionally pleased to be part of this event. It is an informative contact point for NGO's and government organisations, which we would never have had the opportunity to meet with prior to this show." Eco Asia Conference gathers local and international environmental industry leaders Running in tandem with the fair, the Eco Expo Conference was well received by attendees. The three-day conference for eco- industry players covered a variety of environmentally themed topics of concern in Asia today including water & air, waste management & recycling and alternative energy & energy efficiency. "The conference was interesting with many significant topics and more importantly with knowledgeable speakers," said one visitor, Ms. Jessica Bellas, Project Manager for The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Mr. Mike Stokoe, former Deputy Director of the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department, currently Director of Stokoe Associates Limited, was head of the advisory committee for the Conference, ensuring a top-level participation from some of Hong Kong's leading industry professionals. "After running for only two years, the Eco Asia Conference has established itself as a major event in the calendar of business conferences in Hong Kong. I was happy to act as technical advisor to the conference because it provides the best opportunity for business people to learn about progress on environmental protection in the Chinese mainland and in Hong Kong, as well as to meet good contacts who could supply environmental services and other needs," he said. Panelists included Professor Chak Chan, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; Ms. Audrey Mascarenhas, President & CEO of Canadian Questor Technology; Dr. C.W. Tso, General Manager for The Hong Kong Electric Company and Mr. Kenny Wong, Principal Consultant of the Hong Kong Productivity Council.
